Media Use & Experience
Everyday in my entire life, I’ve been using media. From the time I wake up, I check my phone, see my notifications, get updated on the news of the day, to the time I sleep, I use different types of media. These include the new media such social media (i.e. Facebook & Twitter), and the traditional media like newspapers, television and radio. However, the latter is frequently used. One of the primary things I use media for is getting information while communicating with other people.
The internet is a gigantic web of information that is accessible if you have the connection. In these times, you’re missing out a lot of things if you don’t have one. I use the internet for various reasons. Entertainment, research, communication, education and self-development are one of many reasons why I use the internet. Like any good thing, too much is still never good. Most of time is used on social media, especially in Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. I usually just juggle between the four of these. These platforms give off memes, news, ideas and almost every type of content that can be thinked of. I personally use these apps for communication, entertainment and self-development. I can say that I’m a little addicted to social media, since I almost always procrastinate.
The internet is a good thing, with lots of good contents that inspire and motivate people. However, on the other hand of the spectrum, it also contains dark ones. These include the dark web, pornography, cybercrime, etc. I personally have encountered both ends of the spectrum – the pleasant and unpleasant ones. I am who I am because of the internet. I watch motivational, educational and how-to videos that made me a better person over all. Communication is even so convenient especially using the Facebook Messenger app. With all these good things, I also experienced inappropriate content in the internet such as pornography. Overall, it all matters on how internet is used and regulated by the person who uses it.
Regulation…
I couldn’t agree more that there are always advantages and disadvantages of using the internet, let alone using it for communication. The internet is a double-edged sword. It’s a tool that is used depending on the intention of the user. It can be used to motivate, educate and inspire people, but on the other hand, it can also be used to bring despair, fake information and chaos.
It all comes down to one word: regulation. Again, too much or too little of something, even if it’s good, is never a good thing. There must be a balance between the usage of the internet. We also musn’t be too dependent on it. We should be literate in using the net. We as users of the internet must recognize the it is only a tool that will help our lives more conveniently.
